What to expect in a new job

STARTING WORK

Starting work or an apprenticeship is a lot different from going to school. For starters, you want need to wear your school uniform... but you may need to wear a uniform or particular type of clothing depending on your role.

Always check with your future employers what you should wear on your first day.

Unlike school most jobs don't finish at 3.30! Some do, but most conventional jobs have working hours from 9am - 5pm. Other jobs may have earlier starts or later finshes etc.

YOUR BOSS

In the work place you wont have teachers, you will have a boss. It is important that you treat your boss with respect. Messing around and showing disrespect to teachers can get you in trouble and in detention, but doing the same to your boss could get you sacked.

Always remember that your boss and the people you work with are giving you a chance at employment. They don't have to keep you on and could sack you if you misbehave or don't put enough effort in.

 

NO HOMEWORK?

And one more thing that's not like school is that usually with a job there is no homework! But sometimes you maybe required to work late or you may have to revise for training linked to your work.

Always check with your future employer what extra effort you will need to put in and make it clear that you are happy to go the extra mile to kick start your career.

 

IS WORK HARD WORK?

Work is sometimes hard work so brace yourself for a change and don't give up. If you are having problems, speak to someone who may be able to help you out. Perhaps your boss, or a fellow employee or a parent or carer.
